Duncan Robinson Essay Contest

Duncan Robinson Essay Contest Form

Duncan Robinson was formerly chair of the English Department.  His family has established a memorial fund which is used to fund a freshman essay contest.  Four winners are chosen each year and each receives a $50 scholarship and a certificate.  For each academic year, all students taking 1301 or 1302 are eligible to submit their essays for this award. Students from both the fall and the spring semesters are eligible, and essays written in either fall or spring semester may be submitted. There will be a spring banquet toward the end of April and the winners of the Duncan Robinson awards will be honored at it.  The deadline for entries is April 9th.

What exactly the subject of the essay contest? The only one I was aware of is for the Kite Runner, but this seems to be unassociated with it. (”Essays submitted to the fall 2007 Kite Runner essay contest are not eligible.”)

Submitting “an essay written in ENGL 1301 or 1302″ is too ambiguous.

I believe that the contest regulations mean that you CAN submit your Kite Runner Essay… but only IF you did not already submit it for the Kite Runner Essay Contest.

Other than that limitation on the same essay being submitted twice, I think that they mean to accept any major essay assignments from either class.

For example, many 1301 instructors assigned a LITERACY AUTOBIOGRAPHY and a SYNTHESIS ESSAY or READER-RESPONSE ESSAY. These would be good choices, as would any eligible Kite Runner Essay.
